HEY RECOMMENDS: Burger Invasion Cologne

By Savannah

“Records and music aren’t an exclusive type of scene. Everybody loves music.”
-Sean Bohrman (Founder of Burger Records)

The guys of Burger Records are passionate about one thing: Finding that weird band you wouldn’t normally listen to, slapping it onto a groovy looking tape, and spreading it amongst the Burger friends and fans.

“Burger is rock ‘n roll. It’s, besides our life, where we put a lot of our energies and where a lot of our friends put their energies into it to create this big community. But for us, it’s just rock ‘n roll at the end of the day.”
-Lee Rickard (Founder of Burger Records)

Friday, September 8, 2017 is right around the corner- which means the one label that I grew up recognizing is coming to Cologne for Burger Invasion! Originally being from Laguna Beach, California, all I heard kids talking about was Burger Records. Burger is the birthplace of a lot of big names, along with loads of well respected bands that are from many different nooks of California. Burger Records was founded in Fullerton, California by best friends Sean and Lee. Their popularity spiked with their contribution to the unexpected revival of the cassette, along with their intense love for unheard, unknown and under-appreciated music. Burger Records is very inspiring because they are real. They are not ones to judge, exclude or prejudice- Sean and Lee are just real dudes that started a record label as a joke to have a home for their band’s music. Now they are a family to the creative, the talented, the weirdos, the passionate music lovers, and to any type of person looking for a dope home.

“People that love rock ‘n roll love Burger because it’s just real. We try to be uninhibited even though we’re squares sometimes.”
-Lee Rickard (Founder of Burger Records)

Cologne is in for a treat because Sean and Lee are bringing some top acts that are going to rock the socks off your feet. First up, they have Elephant Stone- Canadian neo-psychedelic/indie rock band with obvious influences of British Invasion bands (their band name is a reference to the song by the Stone Roses) and Indian classical music.

The act I’m most excited to see is definitely Cosmonauts. Their distorted, amped sound combined with shoe-gaze vibes is what they call their music “drug punk.” The Fullerton, California-based (Orange County) band is known for their simple, physically powerful songs and punishing stage volume. Very much inspired by the 80s and 90s British-indie scene, they have a talent for transposing their influences into songs and capturing an era rather than imitating a band’s exact style. If you’re a fan of bands that anchor their sound with sick guitars, then you are not going to want to miss their set.

Another band to look forward to is L.A. Witch. The garage rock trio is from Los Angeles, California and blend desert punk with 60s girl group sounds- beautifully combining it with Sade Sanchez’s dark and evocative voice. Not to mention, it will be the day their debut album is released so I imagine their set is going to be wild.

There are going to be more great acts like Köln-based band tics, and loads of DJ sets- including a DJ set by the Burger founders! Make sure to snatch a ticket now and head down to the venue early so you don’t miss any of these talented, North American bands. See you there!
